Mike Smith (drummer) facts for kids
Mike Smith was born on July 16, 1971, in The Bronx, New York City. He is an American musician, best known as a founding member and former drummer for the New York-based heavy metal band Suffocation. He played drums on their first demo, Reincremated (1990), the EP Human Waste (1991), their first album Effigy of the Forgotten (1991), and Breeding the Spawn (1993). Mike then left the band.
Suffocation took a break in 1998 but reformed in 2002. Mike Smith returned to the band and played on their albums Souls to Deny (2004), their self-titled album (2006), and Blood Oath (2009). In 2011, Mike Smith and Suffocation were honored by being inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Mike left Suffocation for the second time in February 2012.
Mike Smith is also a drum teacher and a studio musician who plays drums for other artists. He has played drums on the song "Dawn of a Golden Age" for Roadrunner United: The All Star Sessions. He also worked with rapper Necro on his album ... Rap and with the metal band Psychometry. Mike has his own rap music project called GRIMM REAL. The first full album for GRIMM REAL, titled Demise of the Clones, was released in 1999. In 2014, Mike recorded drums for the German heavy metal band Misanthrope Monarch on their first EP. Since then, Mike has completed full albums with bands like Voracious Scourge U.S.A. and Inverted Matter from Italy. He also recorded two songs with his side project Synesis Absorption U.S. As of July 2025, GRIMM REAL is Mike Smith's main music project.
