Mileage facts for kids
"Mileage" is a word that tells us how far something has traveled. It's most often used to talk about how far a car, truck, or motorcycle can go using a certain amount of fuel. Think of it as how "fuel efficient" a vehicle is. A car with good mileage uses less fuel to travel the same distance. This saves money and is better for the environment!

What is Fuel Efficiency?
Fuel efficiency is a way to measure how well a vehicle uses its fuel. If a car has high fuel efficiency, it means it can travel a long distance on a small amount of gasoline or diesel. This is important because fuel costs money, and burning less fuel helps reduce pollution.
How We Measure Mileage
Different countries measure mileage in different ways.
Miles Per Gallon (MPG)
In the United States, people usually measure fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (mpg). This tells you how many miles a vehicle can travel using one U.S. gallon of gasoline. For example, if a car gets 30 mpg, it means it can go 30 miles on one gallon of fuel.
Litres Per 100 Kilometres
In many other parts of the world, like the United Kingdom and most of Europe, fuel efficiency is measured differently. They often use litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km). This tells you how many litres of fuel a vehicle needs to travel 100 kilometres. So, a car that uses 5 L/100 km is more fuel efficient than one that uses 10 L/100 km, because it uses less fuel to go the same distance. The UK also sometimes uses miles per imperial gallon.
