Miles M. O'Brien (born in 1852 – died December 22, 1910) was an important person in New York City. He was born in Ireland and moved to the United States when he was twelve years old. He became a successful banker, working with money and banks. Later, he became the president of the New York City Board of Education, which means he was in charge of the city's public schools. His parents were Dr. Miles O'Brien and Fanny Casey O'Brien. He led the New Amsterdam National Bank and was a director at the American Ice Company. His great-great-grandson, also named Miles O'Brien, is a well-known journalist for CNN.

Early Life and Education

Miles M. O'Brien began his career working in a shop that sold fabrics and clothes. He received his education from the Congregation of Christian Brothers and at a school called the Model School. He later earned a special law degree (an L.L.D.) from St. John's College, which is now known as Fordham University.

Leading New York City Schools

Miles M. O'Brien dedicated twenty years of his life to the New York City Board of Education. He was first chosen as the vice-president of the board by New York City's mayor, William R. Grace. During his time, he helped create many important programs for the city.

  • Free Baths: He supported providing free public baths, which were important for health and hygiene at the time.

Strong but was later put back in charge by Mayor Robert A. Van Wyck. He also took part in the Democratic Party's political activities.

Later Life and Passing

Miles M. O'Brien passed away on December 22, 1910, at his home in Manhattan, New York. He was 58 years old and died from an intestinal illness. His funeral was held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Manhattan.
