Miliama Simeona (died 27 September 2020) was a very important doctor from Tuvalu. She was one of the first two women from Tuvalu to become a doctor. Along with Nese Ituaso-Conway, she helped open doors for other women in medicine in her country. Dr. Simeona specialized in women's health, focusing on gynaecology (care for women's reproductive health) and obstetrics (helping mothers during pregnancy and childbirth).

Early Life and Education

Miliama Simeona was born on Nanumaga island in Tuvalu. She went to Nanumaga Lotohoni Primary School and then Motufoua Secondary School.

She was very good at her studies. Because of her hard work, she received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed her to finish high school in Australia at Townsville Cathedral School. After that, she went on to study medicine at the Fiji School of Medicine.

Becoming a Doctor

After a lot of hard work, Miliama Simeona earned her medical degree. She spent a year working as an intern at a big hospital in Suva, Fiji. This gave her important hands-on experience.

In 1999, Dr. Simeona returned to Tuvalu. She immediately began working as a doctor there. From 2001 to 2002, she went back to the Fiji School of Medicine. She earned a special diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This extra training made her an expert in women's health.

Helping Families in Tuvalu

Dr. Simeona was a Medical Officer with the Ministry of Health in Tuvalu. From 2002 to 2011, she worked as an Obstetrician Gynaecologist at Princess Margaret Hospital (Funafuti). This is the main hospital in Tuvalu. She helped many women and families during this time.

She also helped create the Tuvalu Standard Treatment Guidelines in 2010. These guidelines are like a rulebook for doctors. They help make sure everyone gets the best medical care.

From 2011 to 2016, Dr. Simeona was the Executive Director for the Tuvalu Family Health Association. In this role, she helped expand the health services offered to families. This meant more people could get the care they needed.

Important Roles

Dr. Miliama Simeona also represented Tuvalu in important medical groups. She was a representative for the Pacific Society for Reproductive Health. She also worked with the Oceania Society for Health and HIV Medicine. These roles allowed her to share her knowledge and help improve health across the Pacific region.
