History of the MOSB
How the Order Began
The Military Order of the Stars and Bars was founded in 1938. This happened in Columbia, South Carolina. Seventeen former Confederate officers and 47 male descendants of officers attended a meeting. They decided to create a new group for people connected to the CSA. They chose the name "Order of the Stars & Bars." They also agreed to hold meetings every year.
Name Change and New Symbol
The group changed its name in 1976. It became "The Military Order of the Stars & Bars." This change happened at their 39th annual meeting in Memphis, Tennessee. At this time, they also chose a special symbol. They adopted the Confederate battle flag as their official sign.
What the MOSB Does
Purpose and Leadership
The MOSB describes itself as a non-political group. It focuses on education, history, and patriotism. It also aims to preserve heritage. The leader of the group is called the "Commander General." As of 2022, Jon E. Trent holds this position.
Activities and Awards
The organization gives out scholarships to students. They also give awards for books. These books are usually about the history of the Confederacy.
Member Pledges
When new members join, they make a special promise. They also do this at the start of meetings. Members pledge to remember and honor the leaders from the past. They want to keep the history of these people alive. This is for themselves, their community, and future generations. They also salute the Confederate flag. They show respect and devotion for what it represents to them.
Connections to Other Groups
The MOSB is connected to another group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans. This is another group that focuses on Confederate history. Some people are members of both organizations.
