Exploring the Past: Millard's Crossing Village
How the Village Started
Millard's Crossing Historic Village is a big outdoor museum, about 37 acres wide. It was created by a woman named Lera Millard Thomas in the 1970s. The village is built on land that belonged to her family, and it's where she grew up.
The idea for the village began in 1966. Lera Thomas, who was the wife of a politician named Albert Thomas, started by restoring just one old house. This house was built in the Victorian style, which was popular a long time ago.
Growing the Collection
After restoring the first house, Lera Thomas kept going! She started saving and fixing up many other old buildings from East Texas. These buildings show different styles of architecture from the past.
The village is located right next to a railroad track. You can even see a restored red train caboose there! Besides the train car, you'll find old log cabins and other beautiful Victorian-style buildings.
The Millard-Lee House
One very important building in the village is the Millard-Lee House. Lera Thomas also restored this house. It's so important that it's officially recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This means it's a special place with a lot of history. The house was first built around 1837 by Robert G. Millard. Later, in 1859, David Lee bought the house.
