A Look Back in Time: The Village's Story
Millard's Crossing Historic Village is a large outdoor museum covering about 37-acre (14.97 ha; 0.06 sq mi). It was started in the 1970s by a woman named Lera Millard Thomas. She grew up on the very land where the village now stands.
How the Village Began
The idea for the village started in 1966. Lera Millard Thomas began by restoring one old Victorian house. She was the wife of a well-known politician, Congressman Albert Thomas. After restoring that first house, she decided to save and restore other old buildings from East Texas.
What You Can See at the Village
The village is next to a railroad track. You can even see a restored red train caboose there! The village is home to many different kinds of old buildings. You'll find rustic log cabins and beautiful Victorian-style houses.
One very important building is the Millard-Lee House. Lera Thomas also restored this house. It was built around 1837 by Robert G. Millard. Later, in 1859, David Lee bought the house. The Millard-Lee House is also a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
