A Home with a Story: The Sterne–Hoya House History
Adolphus Sterne: A Texas Pioneer
The house was built in 1830 by a man named Adolphus Sterne. He came from Cologne, Germany. Adolphus Sterne became good friends with Sam Houston when he was traveling through Tennessee. In 1826, Sterne moved to Nacogdoches.
Sterne was involved in early Texas history. He helped get weapons for the Fredonian Rebellion. He also helped pay for the Texas Revolution. When Texas became a state, Sterne worked in the government. He served in both parts of the state legislature.
Famous Visitors and Important Events
The Sterne–Hoya House has seen many important moments. In 1835, the famous frontiersman Davy Crockett stayed there for two weeks.
Sam Houston was also baptized into the Catholic faith in the house's parlor. This was important because it helped him meet the rules of the Mexican government. It allowed him to live in Coahuila y Tejas and own land.
The House's Design and Changes
The house is a one-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and sits on a brick foundation. The front entrance has a Victorian style porch. Behind the main house, there used to be separate living areas for servants.
Adolphus Sterne also built other buildings on the property. These included a stable, a smokehouse, a hen house, and a corn crib. These buildings are no longer there today. Sterne made many updates and repairs to the house over the twenty years after it was first built.
The Hoya Family's Connection
In 1866, the Hoya family bought the house. Charles Hoya was a county surveyor in Nacogdoches. He ran the Hoya Land Office downtown. Charles lived in the house with his wife, Frances, and his father, Joseph T. Von der Hoya. Joseph was an immigrant from Prussia.
Visiting the Sterne–Hoya House Museum
The Sterne–Hoya House became a museum and library. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It also became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1977. The museum and library display many old items from the area. These items were given by the Hoya family.
Hours and Admission
It is free to visit the museum. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can visit Wednesday through Saturday. If you have a group that wants to visit, you should book your tour ahead of time.
