Millie Gamble (1887–1986) was a talented amateur photographer from Prince Edward Island, Canada. She took many pictures between 1905 and 1920. Her photos show what life was like in the Tryon area during that time.

Who Was Millie Gamble?

Millie Gamble was born in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island, on January 17, 1887. She spent many years working as a school teacher. From 1905 to 1906, she taught in North Bedeque. Then, from 1907 to 1919, she taught in Tryon.

A Change in Career

After teaching for a long time, Millie decided to try something new. She moved to Winnipeg to study nursing. She graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1922. After becoming a nurse, she returned to Prince Edward Island. She worked as a nurse in Tryon until she retired in 1949.

Her Start in Photography

Millie Gamble received her first camera in 1904. It was a Ray No. 1 camera. She got it while visiting her uncle in Truro, Nova Scotia. She was one of the first amateur photographers on Prince Edward Island.

Millie's Unique Photos

Millie took many well-composed pictures of the Tryon area. Her photos are special because they show everyday life. Earlier photographers often took stiff, posed pictures. But Millie captured more natural scenes of people and places. Her photos give us a real look at what life was like back then.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Millie Gamble's work was first shown in 1983. The Regional Art Gallery in London, Ontario, featured her photos. This was part of an exhibition called Rediscovering Canadian Women Photographers, 1841-1941. More recently, her photos have been shown at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown.

Millie Gamble Road

In 2016, a part of the old Trans-Canada Highway in Tryon was renamed. It is now called Millie Gamble Road. This was done to honor her and her amazing work.
