Milo III of Bar-sur-Seine facts for kids
Milo III, also known as Milon III in French, was an important leader in medieval France. He was the Count of Bar-sur-Seine from 1147 until he passed away in 1151. Milo was the oldest son of Count Guy and Petronilla of Chacenay.
Joining a Holy War
In 1147, Milo joined a big religious journey called the Second Crusade. He traveled with the army of Henry the Liberal, who was the future ruler of the County of Champagne. We don't know much about what Milo did during this crusade. His father might have died during the crusade, but it's not certain. Milo returned to France by the end of 1149.
Family Life
Milo married a woman named Agnes. She was the heiress of Braine and the castle of Baudement. Milo and Agnes had one daughter, Petronilla, who was born around 1150.
His Final Days
About a year after his daughter was born, Milo became ill. He was visiting Count Theobald II of Champagne when he fell sick. Milo passed away in Troyes in 1151. Some records say he died on October 1, 1151.
Before he died, Milo made a special gift to the Abbey of Larivour. He gave them the right to receive some wheat and a mix of wheat and rye every year. This gift came from the mills in Bar-sur-Seine. His mother, wife, and daughter were there to witness and confirm this gift.
His Daughter's Future
When Milo died, his daughter Petronilla was still a baby. She inherited the county of Bar-sur-Seine. Because she was so young, Milo's brother, Manasses, became her guardian. He managed the county until Petronilla was old enough to rule it herself.
In 1168, Petronilla took over the county. She later married Hugh IV of Le Puiset. Milo's wife, Agnes, remarried too. She married Count Robert I of Dreux. Agnes was still alive in 1217.
