The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is a special art school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is a private college, meaning it's not run by the government. MIAD started in 1974. Here, students can earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This school is like the next step after the old Layton School of Art. It used to be called the Milwaukee School for the Arts.

History of MIAD
MIAD's story begins with the Layton School of Art. This earlier art school started in 1920. It was founded by two women, Charlotte R. Partridge and Miriam Frink.
They worked hard from 1920 until 1954. Their goal was to make Layton a top-notch art school. Many great teachers came to Layton. By 1954, over 1000 students were taking classes.
When the Layton School closed in 1974, seven teachers decided to start a new school. They co-founded the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Some of these founders were CW Peckenpaugh, Roland Poska, and Jack H. White.
What Students Study
MIAD focuses on one main degree. Students can earn a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree here. This degree is for people who want to become professional artists or designers.
The school is officially approved by two important groups. These are the Higher Learning Commission and the National Association of Schools of Art & Design. This means MIAD meets high standards for education.
Teachers and Students
MIAD has about 100 teachers. These teachers are working artists, designers, and experts in their fields. They bring real-world experience to the classroom.
There are about 650 full-time students at MIAD. This means there are about 15 students for every teacher. This small ratio helps students get lots of personal attention.
Student Life and Enrollment
MIAD has many students who are working towards their degrees.
- About 630 students are studying full-time or part-time.
- Many younger students also attend MIAD. About 600 pre-college students take classes.
- Another 250 students join special programs.
MIAD's Campus
MIAD's campus is in a cool part of Milwaukee. It's in the Historic Third Ward. This area is known for its art. The campus is close to the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan.
The school uses three old buildings. These buildings have been updated for art students. In 1992, MIAD moved into its main building. This is the Jane Bradley Pettit Building. It has a huge amount of space, about 245,000 square feet, spread across five floors.
