Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Minnborinus of Cologne was an important Irish abbot and saint. He lived a long time ago, between the years 974 and 986. He was known for his work in Germany.

An Irish Leader in Germany

Minnborinus was the leader of a group of missionaries from Ireland. Missionaries are people who travel to new places to share their beliefs. Minnborinus and his group traveled all the way to a city called Cologne in Germany.

When they arrived, the main church leader in Cologne, who was called the Archbishop Warin, gave Minnborinus an important job. He made Minnborinus the abbot of St. Martin's Abbey. An abbot is like the head of a monastery, which is a special religious community. Today, this abbey is known as the Great St. Martin Church. The rest of Minnborinus's group also joined him at the abbey.

Leading St. Martin's Abbey

Minnborinus was in charge of St. Martin's Abbey for many years. He led the abbey from 974 until he passed away on August 15, 986. After his death, another Irish person, Kilian of Cologne, took over as abbot.

Irish Connections in Cologne

Because St. Martin's Abbey was known as an "Irish abbey," it had strong ties to Ireland. Many churches and chapels in the area were dedicated to Irish saints. For example, five churches and seven chapels were dedicated to Saint Brigid, a very famous Irish saint.

When is His Feast Day?

Minnborinus is remembered as a saint. His special day, called a feast day, is celebrated every year on July 18.
