About Miquel Carbonell's Life

Early Life and Art Training

When Miquel was just ten years old, he had a health problem with his leg. This meant he had to stay in bed for a whole year. It also caused lasting damage, so he needed to use a cane to walk.

At age thirteen, Miquel started working with a painter in Barcelona to learn the basics. Just two years later, he joined a famous art school called the Escola de la Llotja. There, he learned from a well-known artist named Antoni Caba.

First Exhibitions and Awards

Miquel had his very first art show in 1872 at the Society of Fine Arts. He finished his studies in 1875. He was a very good student and won several awards for how he put his art together (composition), how he used colors, and how he showed depth (perspective).

Studying Abroad and Moving Around

After art school, Miquel went to Rome, Italy, to continue learning. He could do this because a rich financier named Ferran Puig i Gibert gave him money (a stipend) to support his studies.

In 1880, Miquel moved to Madrid, the capital of Spain. Even though he lived in Madrid, he often visited Barcelona and his hometown. He got married in his hometown in 1882. In Madrid, he also worked on decorating the inside of buildings.

Paris and Poetry

In 1889, Miquel Carbonell joined other Catalan artists and traveled to Paris, France. They took part in a big event called the Exposition Universelle, which was a world's fair.

Around this time, Miquel also started writing and publishing poetry. His poems appeared in magazines like Lo Gay Saber and the Calendari Català.

Remembering Miquel Carbonell

Miquel Carbonell passed away in 1896. In 1902, the local government in his hometown decided to name a street after him. This was a way to honor his memory and his contributions as an artist and poet.
