Miroslav Ondříček (born November 4, 1934 – died March 28, 2015) was a famous cinematographer from the Czech Republic. A cinematographer is the person in charge of how a movie is filmed. They decide on the camera angles, lighting, and how each scene looks.

Miroslav Ondříček worked on more than 40 films during his career. Some of his most well-known movies include Amadeus, Ragtime, and If..... He was known for his amazing skill in making movies look beautiful and exciting.

Early Life and Career

Miroslav Ondříček was born in Prague, which was then part of Czechoslovakia. Today, Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic. He learned how to make movies at the Barrandov Studio Training School. This school helped him start his journey in the film world.

He began making movies during a special time in Czech cinema called the Czech New Wave. This was a period in the 1960s when many talented young filmmakers in Czechoslovakia made creative and unique movies.

His first big movie project was Talent Competition, which he worked on with director Miloš Forman. This was the start of a long and successful partnership between Ondříček and Forman. They worked together on many films, even after Forman moved to the United States.

Working with Famous Directors

Miroslav Ondříček continued to work with Miloš Forman on several popular movies in the US. These included Hair (1979), a musical film; Ragtime (1981), a historical drama; and Amadeus (1984), a film about the composer Mozart. Amadeus was a huge success and won many awards.

He also worked with a British film director named Lindsay Anderson. They made two important films together: If.... (1968) and O Lucky Man! (1973). These movies helped show Ondříček's talent to a wider audience.

Family Life

Miroslav Ondříček had a son named David Ondříček. Following in his father's footsteps, David also became a film director. Miroslav was also a member of the board at the Film School in Pisek, helping to guide new filmmakers.

Later Years and Death

Miroslav Ondříček passed away in Prague when he was 80 years old. He left behind a legacy of beautiful films and is remembered as one of the most important cinematographers of his time.
