Miró III of Cerdanya facts for kids
Miró III of Cerdanya and II of Besalú, also known as Bonfill (born in Girona in 920 – died in 984), was a powerful leader. He was the count of Cerdanya and Besalú from 968 to 984.
Miró III was the third son of Miro II and Ava. He took over from his brother, Sunifred II of Cerdanya, as count.
Miró III: A Count and Bishop
Miró III had an interesting life path. He first became a clergyman, which means he worked for the church. By 957, he was an archdeacon, a high-ranking church official. Later, in 970, he became the bishop of Girona, a very important religious leader in the region. He held this position until his death in 984.
Travels and Writings
Miró III was well-connected and educated. He traveled to Rome twice, which was a big journey in those days. He was also good friends with Gerbert of Aurillac, who later became Pope Sylvester II.
Miró was a talented writer with a unique style. He wrote historical accounts, focusing on praising and remembering the important people in the families of the Catalan counts. His writings help us understand the history of that time.
Building and Legacy
Miró III was also known for his work in building and supporting monasteries. He oversaw the consecration (a special religious ceremony to dedicate a building) of two important monasteries:
- Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa in 974
- The Monastery of Ripoll in 977
He also founded new monasteries, which means he helped start them from scratch:
- The monastery of Santa Maria de Serrateix in 977
- The monastery of Sant Pere de Besalu in 978
After Miró III's death, his brother Oliba Cabreta took over both counties. Oliba Cabreta had actually been ruling Cerdanya alongside Miró since 968.
