The Miss Bellows Falls Diner is a really old and special diner located at 90 Rockingham Street in Bellows Falls, Vermont. It was built in 1941 by a company called the Worcester Lunch Car Company. This diner is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's a historic place worth protecting!
What Makes This Diner Special?
The Miss Bellows Falls Diner sits on Rockingham Street in Bellows Falls. It's very close to the road. The diner has a unique "barrel-roof" shape. It is made of metal and measures about 18 by 31 feet (5.5 by 9.4 meters).
Its outside walls are covered in original enamel panels. These panels even show the diner's name! You can enter the diner from either end. Each entrance has a small covered area. The kitchen and bathrooms are in a wooden addition at the back.
Inside the Diner
Step inside, and you'll see many original features. The walls are covered in shiny enamel panels and polished wood. The floor has colorful tiles. You'll find oak booths with Formica tabletops. The main counter is made of marble and metal. Even the service area has old-fashioned refrigerator cabinets and menu boards.
A Diner's Journey
The Worcester Lunch Car Company built this diner in 1941. It was their 771st diner! It is the only diner of its kind still standing in Vermont.
This diner was first built for John Korsak and Frank Willie. They planned to open it in Lowell, Massachusetts, and call it "Frankie & Johnny's." But then, both John and Frank were called to serve in World War II. So, they sold the diner.
The diner arrived in Bellows Falls on May 14, 1944. It took the place of an older diner that used to be there.
When Was It Built?
Some old records incorrectly said this diner was built in the 1930s. However, its model number, #771, tells us it was built in 1941. Another diner, the Rosebud (diner) in Somerville, Massachusetts, was Worcester #773. It was also built in 1941. The Worcester company numbered their diners in order as they made them.
