Miss Grace's Lane facts for kids
Miss Grace's Lane is a cool natural cave system. It's also known as Miss Grace's Lane Swallett. You can find it near Tidenham in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. The entrance to this cave was dug out by members of the Royal Forest of Dean Caving Club (RFDCC) between 1994 and 1997.
Exploring Miss Grace's Lane Cave
Getting into the cave is a bit special. You go through a locked manhole cover. The keys are kept by the Royal Forest of Dean Caving Club, or RFDCC for short. They have an agreement with the landowners, the Forestry Commission, which lets them manage who goes in.
Once inside, there's a shaft that goes down about 30-metre (98 ft) (that's like a 10-story building!). It has a fixed ladder to help you get down safely. This shaft leads to the first big room, which cavers call "Autumn Frenzy."
How Big is the Cave?
Miss Grace's Lane cave is quite long! It stretches for about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) (that's almost 2.5 miles). This makes it the second-longest cave in the whole Forest of Dean area.
The longest cave in the area is called Slaughter Stream Cave. That one is much bigger, reaching about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) (around 8 miles) in length. So, Miss Grace's Lane is a significant cave, but not the absolute biggest around.
