Mission Viejo is a neighborhood in Aurora, Colorado. It's part of the bigger Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area. This area is surrounded by Buckley Road to the east, Hampden Avenue to the north, Chambers Road to the west, and Quincy Avenue to the south.
How Mission Viejo Started
The land where Mission Viejo now stands was once a large farm. Around 1972, a company from California called the Mission Viejo Company bought this land. They wanted to build a planned community, just like their famous development in Mission Viejo, California.
They designed the neighborhood with special "Barcelona" entrance walls. The street lights were shaped like "Mission Bells." Even two of the main roads, Alicia Parkway and Marguerite Parkway, were named after important women from the company's history. The new community officially opened in September 1972.
Exploring Mission Viejo's Features
Mission Viejo has many great things for its residents. You can find parks, a public library, and different styles of homes. There's also an elementary school from the Cherry Creek Schools district.
One cool feature is the big circle in the middle of the neighborhood. It's formed by Mission Parkway, Alicia Parkway, and Mission Viejo Park. Mission Viejo Park is a huge green space inside this circle. It has walking paths, picnic spots, and sports fields. It's a perfect place for families and community events. Tollgate Creek also runs along one side of the park. There's a paved path next to it where people often walk their dogs.
Mission Viejo is made up of different types of homes. There are houses in the main Mission Viejo area. You can also find townhomes and condos in areas like Seville Townhomes and Cherry Glen.
The Story of the Mission Viejo Library
In 2009, the City of Aurora faced budget problems. They decided to close the Mission Viejo library branch to save money. But the people living in Mission Viejo didn't want their library to close!
The Mission Viejo Homeowners Association (HOA) board met in November 2009. They decided to hire a lawyer to try and stop the city. The HOA believed the city had an agreement from 1973. This agreement said the city had to provide library services for 50 years.
After a lot of discussion, the Aurora City Council decided not to close the library right away. They held special meetings to talk about the library's future. The HOA and the City of Aurora eventually met and worked out a deal. This agreement was approved in February 2012. Thanks to this, the Mission Viejo library branch will stay open for many more years!
