Mme Sicard was a talented French composer who lived in the 1600s. Her first name isn't known today, but we know she was active around 1678. She holds a special place in history as the very first woman composer from France to have her music officially published!

Who Was Mme Sicard?

Mme Sicard was the daughter of another composer named Jean Sicard. She learned music from her father and became his student. Her father was very proud of her. He even dedicated his 12th book of music to her! This showed how much he respected her musical skills.

Her Musical Contributions

Mme Sicard wrote many beautiful airs (which are like songs or melodies) for her father's published music collections. She contributed to several of his books:

  • One air in his 12th book.
  • Three airs in his 13th book.
  • One air in his 14th book.
  • One air in his 16th book.

Her work helped make her father's publications even more popular.

A Pioneer in Music

Mme Sicard's biggest achievement was becoming the first French woman to have her compositions published. This was a huge step for women in music during her time. Soon after her, another famous French woman composer, Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, also began publishing her amazing music. Both women helped open doors for future female musicians and composers.
