Moerangi River facts for kids
The Moerangi River, also sometimes called the Moerangi Stream, is a cool river located in New Zealand's amazing Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park. Even though it's not a huge river, it's super important because it's one of the main rivers that flows into the Waiau River, Hawke's Bay. People love to visit the Moerangi River for hiking, fishing, and hunting adventures.
Exploring the Moerangi River
The Moerangi River is a great spot for outdoor fun. It's a bit hidden away, which makes it perfect for those who love nature and adventure. You can explore its banks, try to catch some fish, or even go hunting in the nearby forests.
How to Get There
Reaching the Moerangi River is part of the adventure! You can get there by walking for a few hours or by taking a helicopter. Most people choose to walk, and there are two main paths:
- Okahu Road Track: This path starts from Okahu Road and leads to Rogers Hut. It's a pretty easy walk and usually takes about 3 hours. Rogers Hut has 6 bunks if you want to stay overnight.
- Whirinaki Car Park Track: This path begins at the Whirinaki Car Park, which is at the end of River Road. It takes you to Moerangi Hut, and this walk is a bit tougher, taking around 4 hours. Moerangi Hut has 9 bunks for visitors.
There's also a special hiking trail that follows the river for most of its length. This trail connects Rogers Hut, at the lower end of the river, to Moerangi Hut, further upstream.
Fishing Fun
The Moerangi River is a fantastic place for fishing, especially if you're looking for rainbow trout. The river has lots of these fish, and they are usually quite big, weighing between 3 and 6 pounds. The river is also very important for the Waiau River because many trout come here to lay their eggs.
You can find great fishing spots all along the river, from Rogers Hut all the way up to Moerangi Hut. Even past Moerangi Hut, where the river gets a bit smaller, it's worth checking out, especially in autumn. That's when the fish move into the smaller streams at the very top of the river to spawn.
Hunting Adventures
The Moerangi River and the track that follows it also give hunters access to some quiet and remote areas. The most common animal you'll find here is the red deer. However, there are also some wild pigs in the area, making it a good spot for different types of hunting.
