About Molly Brett's Life
Molly Brett, whose full name was Mary Elizabeth Brett, grew up in Surrey, Great Britain. She was always surrounded by animals and nature, which greatly influenced her art. Her mother, Mary Gould Brett, was also a well-known animal painter. She encouraged Molly to draw animals from real life. This helped Molly make her animal characters look very natural, even when they were doing human things. Like another famous artist, Beatrix Potter, Molly was very good at observing nature, especially woodlands.
How Molly Became an Artist
Molly started her art journey by taking an illustration course through the mail. Later, she went to formal art schools like the Press Art School and the Guildford School of Art. At Guildford, she met Margaret Tarrant, who also became a famous illustrator. They became close friends and even lived together in Cornwall for a while.
Molly began her career by drawing pictures for children's "weekly papers." One of her first big jobs was illustrating stories by the popular author Enid Blyton. This inspired Molly to write and illustrate her own books.
Molly's Books and Art Style
Molly wrote and illustrated 21 books for a company called the Medici Society in London. She worked with them for 60 years! The Medici Society published over 500 of her paintings as postcards, greeting cards, and art prints.
Molly Brett's artwork has delighted many generations of children. Her drawings are known for their beautiful details, soft colors, and magical feeling. Her work is similar to other artists from the 1900s who drew "dressed animals," like Beatrix Potter, Margaret Tempest, and Racey Helps.
