The Monasterio de San Pelayo was started by King Alfonso II of Asturias. He was also known as the Chaste. When it was first built, the monastery was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Later, it was rededicated to Saint Pelayo, a martyr. It is believed that Saint Pelayo's relics, which are special historical items, were brought to the monastery in the year 994.

How Has the Monastery Changed Over Time?

The monastery is located very close to the Cathedral of Oviedo. Over many years, especially after the 16th century, the building was changed a lot. Many of its original Romanesque style parts were updated or removed. The church inside the monastery was designed in 1590 by an architect named Leonardo de la Cajiga. These changes gave the monastery the look it has today.
