The Santa María de La Vid monastery is a historic building in Spain. It is found in the Duero Valley, a beautiful area. The monastery is in a town called La Vid y Barrios, which is in the Province of Burgos.

The Start of the Monastery

The monastery was first started around 1146. It was built in a different spot called Montesacro. A man named Domingo Gómez founded it. He was the son of Queen Urraca of León and Castile. Domingo became interested in a group of monks called the Praemonstratensian order. He learned about them during a trip to France. This monastery was the very first Praemonstratensian house in Spain.

In 1152, the monastery moved to its current location. King Alfonso VII of León and Castile gave them the land of La Vid. King Alfonso was Domingo Gómez's half-brother.

Saint Dominic's Time Here

Saint Dominic is a very famous saint. He later started his own group, the Dominican Order. When he was 14 years old, Dominic was sent to this monastery. He studied there before going to Palencia. He also became a canon at the monastery. This means he was a member of the religious community. He received holy orders there. Later, he joined the church leaders in Osma. There is a statue of Saint Dominic at the monastery. It shows him wearing the clothes he would have worn as a Praemonstratensian canon.

Later History of the Monastery

The monastery was closed in the 1830s. This happened because of new laws in Spain. These laws were called the ecclesiastical confiscations of Mendizábal. They took away property from the church.

However, the monastery was opened again in the 1860s. A different group of monks, the Augustinians, moved in. They still live and work there today.
