Monika Treut's Journey in Film
Monika Treut went to an all-girls high school. Later, she studied literature and political science at Philipps-University in Marburg. She finished her studies in 1978.
In the mid-1970s, while at university, she started working with video. She worked with media in Marburg, Frankfurt, and Berlin.
In 1984, Treut earned her special degree in philology (the study of language and literature) from the University of Marburg. In the same year, she started a film company called Hyena Filmproduktion with Elfi Mikesch. Together, they began making independent movies.
Monika Treut also spent time in America during the 1980s. She traveled and worked in San Francisco and New York City. There, she met and worked with people like Annie Sprinkle and Werner Schroeter. These experiences led to films such as Annie (a short documentary), My Father is Coming, and Encounter with Werner Schroeter (another short documentary).

Latest Films
Her most recent film is Genderation. It is a documentary that revisits the people from her earlier film, Gendernauts: A Journey Through Shifting Identities, 20 years later. The film shows how the city of San Francisco has changed. It looks at how the city's diverse communities have been affected by new developments. Genderation was released in Germany in 2021.
Zona Norte also revisits Yvonne Bezerra de Mello. Yvonne is a human rights activist who works with children who have experienced difficult situations in Rio. Of Girls and Horses

She said she wanted to show the challenges young people face as they discover who they are. She hoped the film would help them find a way to overcome these challenges.In The Raw and the Cooked, Treut travels around Taiwan. She explores the island's rich food traditions. She also looks at how these traditions connect to Taiwan's unique culture. The film also features people who are trying to create a sustainable food system.
