Education and Early Career
Monika Treut went to an all-girls high school. Later, she studied literature and political science at Philipps-University in Marburg, Germany. In the mid-1970s, while still in college, she started making videos. She earned her doctorate degree in 1984.
That same year, Treut started her own film company called Hyena Filmproduktion with her colleague Elfi Mikesch. This allowed her to create independent films. Her first major movie was ...: The Cruel Woman. In the 1980s, she also spent time in the United States, working in San Francisco and New York City. There, she met and worked with other artists and filmmakers like Werner Schroeter.
