The Monmore Puppy Derby is a special greyhound race held at Monmore Green Stadium in England. It's also known as the Premier Greyhound Racing Puppy Derby because of its main sponsor. This exciting competition started way back in 1943.
Over the years, it has had a few different names. These include the Midland Puppy Championship and the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby. It's a big event for young greyhounds, often called "puppies" in racing terms, even though they are usually between 15 and 24 months old.
In 1963, the race moved to Willenhall Greyhound Stadium for a short time. This happened because a fire damaged the main building at Monmore. By 2022, the winner of the Monmore Puppy Derby received a prize of £20,000. This was a very large prize, even more than some other famous puppy races offered.
Where the Race Takes Place
The Monmore Puppy Derby has mostly been held at Monmore Green Stadium since it began in 1943. The race distance there is 480 metres. For one year, in 1963, it was held at Willenhall Greyhound Stadium. The race was not held for a few years between 1978 and 1983.
