Mono-ski facts for kids
A mono-ski is a special type of sled that helps people ski down snowy mountains. It's used by skiers who have conditions like paraplegia (when legs can't move), spina bifida (a birth condition affecting the spine), muscular dystrophy (weak muscles), or cerebral palsy (a condition affecting movement). Mono-skis are only used in a sport called para-alpine skiing, which is skiing for athletes with disabilities. To use a mono-ski well, skiers need good balance so they don't tip over. The mono-ski has a comfortable chair with a single ski attached underneath.
How Mono-Skis Work
Mono-skis let skiers move down a hill in a very similar way to how people who stand ski. The single ski helps them glide over the snow. Skiers use their upper body and core strength to control the mono-ski and turn.
Getting In and Out
Mono-skis have a special feature called a hydraulic lift. This lift makes it much easier for a skier to get into and out of the mono-ski. It can raise or lower the seat, helping the skier transfer from a wheelchair or another position.
History of Mono-Skis
People first started using mono-skis in 1985 in the United States. This invention helped open up the sport of skiing to many more people with disabilities. It allowed them to experience the thrill of skiing independently.
