Mono is one of the twelve departments in the country of Benin. A department is like a large region or state. The main city and capital of this department is Lokossa.
Before 1999, the area known today as the Kouffo Department was actually a part of Mono. This means Mono used to be even bigger!
Languages Spoken in Mono
People in the Mono Department speak several different languages. The Gen language is special because it is only spoken in this part of Benin. Other languages you might hear include Ewe and some related languages from the Phla–Pherá languages group.

The Mono Department is divided into smaller areas called communes. Think of communes as local districts or groups of towns. These communes help manage local services and communities. The communes in Mono are:
