Discovering Monrovia

Monrovia is a historic spot in Kansas. Even though it's a small community today, it has an interesting past that dates back many years.

A Glimpse into History

Monrovia was planned and started a long time ago, making it one of the oldest settlements in Atchison County.

Early Beginnings

The community of Monrovia was officially platted in 1856. To "plat" a town means that its streets, blocks, and lots were carefully mapped out and recorded. This happened even before Kansas became a state! The people who started Monrovia hoped it would grow into a big town, especially since it was located near the Missouri Pacific Railroad, a major train line. However, it never grew as large as they had hoped.

The Post Office Story

An important part of any community in the past was its post office. A post office helped people send and receive letters, which was how most people communicated over long distances. Monrovia opened its own post office in 1857. It served the community for many years, helping people connect with others, until it finally closed down in 1955.
