Montague Blundell, 1st Viscount Blundell facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Montague Blundell (born 1689, died 1756) was an important British politician. He was known as Sir Montague Blundell before 1720. He served in the British Parliament, specifically in the House of Commons, from 1715 to 1722. Later, he received special titles and became Viscount Blundell.

Early Life and Family

Montague Blundell was the son of Sir Francis Blundell. His mother was Anne Ingoldsby. When his father passed away in 1707, Montague inherited the title of Baronet. A Baronet is a special title that is passed down through families, similar to a knight but inherited.

Political Career

In 1715, Montague Blundell was chosen to represent the area of Haslemere in the British Parliament. He was one of two people elected from that area. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons until 1722. The House of Commons is where elected representatives discuss and make laws for the country.

New Titles and Later Life

In 1720, Montague Blundell received even higher honors. He was given titles in the Peerage of Ireland. The Peerage is a system of hereditary titles, like Duke, Earl, or Baron. He became Baron Blundell and also Viscount Blundell. A Viscount is a noble title, ranking above a Baron but below an Earl.

Lord Blundell married Mary Chetwynd in 1709. He passed away in August 1756, at 67 years old. He did not have any sons who survived him. Because of this, all his special titles ended when he died. However, he had a daughter named Mary. In 1742, he made sure that his estates (his lands and property) would pass to her. Lady Blundell, his wife, passed away in December 1756.

Their daughter, Mary Blundell, married William Trumbull. They later became the grandparents of Mary Hill, Marchioness of Downshire.
