Montague Garrard Drake (born 1692, died 1728) was an important British politician. He came from a place called Shardeloes, near Amersham in Buckinghamshire. He was a member of the Tory political party.

Drake served in the House of Commons, which is a big part of the British Parliament, from 1713 to 1728.

Early Life and Education

Montague Garrard Drake was the only son of Montagu Drake, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Jane Garrard. Montague's father passed away in 1698, and Montague inherited the family's lands and properties.

He received his education at home from a teacher named Philip Ayres. Later, when he was 15, he went to St John's College, Oxford in 1706. He earned his Master of Arts degree in 1709.

From 1710 to 1712, Montague went on a "Grand Tour." This was a common trip for young, wealthy men back then. He visited several countries in Europe, including the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, and France. During his travels, he even studied at the University of Padua in Italy in 1710.

Political Career

Montague Garrard Drake became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Amersham in 1713. He was elected without anyone running against him, right after he turned old enough to be an MP.

He was re-elected for Amersham in 1715 and again in 1722. However, in 1722, he decided to represent Buckinghamshire instead of Amersham.

Drake often voted against the government's plans and ideas in Parliament. In the 1727 election, people in Buckinghamshire were upset with him. They felt he had supported something that went against the rights of local landowners. Because of this, he decided to run for Amersham again in 1727, and he was elected.

Family Life

Montague Garrard Drake married Isabella Marshall on October 13, 1719. Isabella was the daughter of Thomas Marshall, a merchant from London.

Montague Garrard Drake passed away in Bath on April 26, 1728. His son, William, also became an MP for Amersham later on.
