The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Monterrey, also known as the Monterrey Cathedral, is a very important Catholic church. It is the main church for the Archdiocese of Monterrey, which is like a big church district. You can find it in Monterrey, the capital city of the state of Nuevo León in Mexico.
The Monterrey Cathedral
What It Looks Like
The cathedral building is shaped like a Latin cross. This means it has a long central part called a nave, with shorter parts sticking out on the sides. Along the sides of the nave, there are small chapels. The roof of the nave has arched vaults. These vaults lead up to an octagonal (eight-sided) dome.
The outside of the cathedral is a mix of different art styles. You can see both Neoclassical and Baroque designs. The Baroque style is especially clear on the front of the building.
A Look Inside
Inside, the cathedral has a simple but interesting look. It combines different styles, just like the outside. One special part is the chapel of the tabernacle. It has a beautiful front made of silver with designs carved into it. There is also an old Merklin organ from 1893 in the choir area. However, this organ is currently broken and not in use.
How Old Is It?
Building the Monterrey Cathedral took a long time. Construction started in 1705 and finished in 1791. In 1777, the church became a cathedral. This happened when Pope Pius VI created the Diocese of Linares, making it a very important church in the region.
