Montserrat Soliva Torrentó (born January 1, 1943, died September 15, 2019) was a brilliant Spanish scientist. She was a doctor of chemistry and a professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona. Montserrat was a leading expert in Spain on composting, which is a way to recycle organic waste. In 2012, she received a special Environment Award for her important research work.
Her Life and Work
Montserrat Soliva Torrentó was born in Torres de Segre, Lleida, in 1943. She studied Chemical Sciences at the University of Barcelona. Later, she earned her PhD from the Institute of Fundamental Biology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
She worked for six years at a chemical-textile lab in Blanes. Then, she became a professor for 32 years at the School of Agriculture of Barcelona. There, she taught subjects about analyzing chemicals in agriculture. She also taught about how to manage and treat organic waste. Montserrat became an expert in understanding and using organic waste in soil. Even after she retired, she kept working with a group that studied organic waste and composting.
Montserrat's main research focused on composting. Her goal was to help the environment and protect the soil. She also wanted to help farms grow more food. She guided over 150 PhD projects on these topics. She also took part in many research projects. She gave advice to companies and governments about treating waste. Plus, she published many scientific papers.
Montserrat passed away in Blanes on September 15, 2019. Her father, Napoleó Soliva Moner, was a teacher in Blanes for 30 years. There is even a school named after him, the Napoleó Soliva School, to honor his teaching career.
