Who Was Morayma?
Morayma was born in 1467. Her father was Ali Athar, who was a governor in a city called Loja and worked for the royal court in Granada.
Her Early Life and Marriage
People described Morayma as beautiful and very religious. She got married in 1482 to Muhammad XII. He was also known as Boabdil.
Soon after their wedding, Morayma and her husband were held captive by her father-in-law. They were set free in 1483 by the Kingdom of Castile. However, their children were kept by the Castilians as a way to make sure Muhammad XII would follow their agreements. Morayma did not see her children again until 1492, after Granada was taken over by the Christian armies. This event is known as the fall of Granada.
After the Fall of Granada
After Granada fell in 1492, Morayma went with her husband into exile. This means they had to leave their home country and live somewhere else. They went to a place called Andarax Laujar. Sadly, Morayma passed away in 1493, shortly before they were planning to move to Fes, a city in Morocco.
Her Children
Morayma and Muhammad XII had three children:
- Aixa, who later became known as Sister Isabel de Granada.
- Ahmed
