What is Morrell Park?
Morrell Park is a special community in Western Australia. It is home to many Aboriginal families. Unlike some communities, families here lease their own land. This means they rent their plots directly.
How Morrell Park Started
The land for Morrell Park (called Lot 82) was first used in the 1970s. A person named John Morrell started a farm there. He grew citrus fruits and cashew nuts.
Later, the Aboriginal Lands Trust bought Lot 82. This group helps manage land for Aboriginal people. They wanted Indigenous families to start their own farms. Each family would have their own small farm.
From Farms to Homes
Over time, people found the land was not good for farming. The plants did not grow well. So, the area changed. It became a place where families could live in a rural setting. About 23 families now lease land there. They have built their homes in Morrell Park.
How Morrell Park is Managed
Morrell Park is different from many other communities. It does not have one main group or council. This is because each family leases their land individually.
Instead, each family talks directly with service providers. These are companies or groups that provide things like water or electricity. They also talk to groups that help with other needs.
Planning for the Future
There is a plan for Morrell Park called "Layout Plan No.1." This plan helps guide how the area will grow. It makes sure new buildings and services fit well.
The community approved this plan on December 1, 2005. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on March 6, 2007. This plan helps make sure Morrell Park remains a good place to live.
