The Morris Federation started in 1975. It is one of three main groups that help morris dancing teams, called 'sides', in the United Kingdom.

At first, it was called the Women's Morris Federation. It began because another group, the Morris Ring, did not allow teams with only women or both men and women to join. The Federation first welcomed only all-female teams. Their very first meeting was in October 1975 at the University of Bath.

In 1980, the Morris Federation began to include teams with both men and women. By 1982, any team could join, no matter their gender makeup. Around this time, a third group, Open Morris, was formed. It welcomed everyone from the start.

What is the Morris Federation?

The Morris Federation helps morris dancing grow. It also helps people learn more about it.

What Does the Federation Do?

The Morris Federation has several important goals:

  • It helps to share and promote morris dancing for everyone. This includes dancers and people who just like to watch.
  • It helps different morris dancing teams talk to each other. This makes it easier for them to share ideas.
  • It works to make dancing better for its members. This means helping teams improve their skills.
  • It creates a friendly and welcoming space for everyone. This ensures that all dancers feel respected.

Who Can Join the Federation?

The Morris Federation mainly supports morris dancing teams in the UK. But it also lets individuals join. Teams from other countries who are interested in morris dancing can also become members.
