What is Moselle?

Moselle is a historic community in the state of Missouri. It's not a city with a mayor or city council, but rather a collection of homes and land that are part of the wider Franklin County. Many small communities across the United States are unincorporated, meaning they rely on the county for services like roads and law enforcement.

How Moselle Began

The story of Moselle started a long time ago, in 1849. This was when a special type of factory, called a blast furnace, was built in the area. A blast furnace is a huge oven used to melt iron ore, which is a rock containing iron. When the iron ore melts, it separates into liquid iron and other materials. This liquid iron can then be used to make tools, machines, and many other things.

The community of Moselle was likely named after the Moselle River in France. It's common for places in the United States to be named after places in other countries, often reflecting the heritage of the people who settled there.

A Place in History

Moselle also had its own post office. A post office is where people send and receive mail. The Moselle post office opened in 1860 and served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1971.

One important historical site in Moselle is the Moselle Iron Furnace Stack. This is a tall structure that was part of the original blast furnace built in 1849. Because of its importance to history, the Moselle Iron Furnace Stack was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. The National Register of Historic Places is a special list kept by the United States government. It includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. Being on this list helps protect these places and makes sure they are remembered for future generations.
