Mount Gardner facts for kids
Mount Gardner is a very tall mountain located in Antarctica. It stands at an impressive height of 4,587 meters (about 15,050 feet). This makes it one of the highest peaks in the Ellsworth Mountains.
The mountain is found in the west-central part of the Sentinel Range. It is about 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 kilometers) west of another large mountain called Mount Tyree. Mount Gardner also overlooks a glacier named Patton Glacier to its northeast.
Discovering Mount Gardner
Mount Gardner was first seen by a group of explorers in 1957–58. This group was on a special trip called the Marie Byrd Land Traverse. It was led by a person named Charles R. Bentley.
How Mount Gardner Got Its Name
The mountain was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They chose to honor Lieutenant Harvey E. Gardner. He was a pilot for the U.S. Navy. Lieutenant Gardner flew planes in Antarctica during the 1957–58 and 1958–59 seasons. Sadly, he passed away in a plane crash on January 4, 1959. Naming the mountain after him was a way to remember his important work.
