Mount Gilboa Chapel is a very old church in Oella, Maryland, United States. It is a special stone church built around 1859. Free African Americans built this church. It is not very big, about 28 feet wide and 42 feet long. The front of the church is made of carefully cut stones. The sides and back use rougher, natural stones.
The Story of Mount Gilboa Chapel
Mount Gilboa Chapel replaced an even older church. That first church was made of logs. We do not know exactly when it was built.
A Famous Neighbor
It is possible that Benjamin Banneker attended services in the old log church. Banneker was a famous African American scientist and astronomer. He lived nearby. In 1977, a tall stone monument was placed in the churchyard. This monument remembers Benjamin Banneker. It stands near his unmarked grave. There are less than two dozen marked graves in the churchyard.
A Special Landmark
Mount Gilboa Chapel is a very important historical place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history.
