How Mount Harrington Got Its Name

Mount Harrington was named in 1960 by a group called The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee. They decided to name the mountain after a very important geologist named Hilary J. Harrington. A geologist is a scientist who studies the Earth's rocks and how they were formed.

Hilary J. Harrington led a special group of scientists called the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE). He led this expedition to the region where Mount Harrington is located during 1957–58. He also led another NZGSAE expedition in the McMurdo Sound area during 1958–59. Later, he continued his research in Antarctica. He worked as an investigator for the United States Antarctic Research Program in the McMurdo Sound region in 1968–69. He worked with another scientist named Russell J. Korsch during that time.
