How Mount Pleasant Began
Mount Pleasant was officially mapped out, or "platted," in 1856. This means someone created a detailed map showing how the land was divided into lots and streets. The community was given the name "Mount Pleasant" because it was considered a nice or "commendatory" name, meaning it sounded pleasant and welcoming.
The Story of Its Names
For a time, Mount Pleasant was also known by another name: "Ellington." The community had a post office that first opened in 1862 under the name Mount Pleasant. However, in 1879, the name of the post office was changed to Ellington. This post office served the community for several years before it finally closed down in 1890.
