What Does the Hospital Look Like?
The building was constructed between 1912 and 1914. A famous architect named William P. Ginther designed it. It is made of red bricks and sits on a strong foundation of light-colored limestone.
Building Shape and Size
The hospital building is quite large and has a special shape. It has a tall, 9-story central part, which is like a tower. On each side of this tower, there are two shorter, 5-story sections. These parts are connected by thin, 7-story hallways. If you look at the building from above, it looks a bit like two "E" letters facing away from each other.
The main entrance faces Sixth Street. In 1948, a smaller, 3-story part was added to the north side. The building has many windows that are all the same, and it has a flat roof. There are also special stone decorations around the building.
Outdoor Areas
The old hospital building takes up most of its land. But it does have some nice outdoor spaces. There are park-like courtyards between the different parts of the building. Next to the south side, there is a small parking lot and a grassy area. This grassy spot is where the very first Mount St. Mary's Hospital, known as the "House on the Corner," used to stand.
How Was the Building Used?
For many years, this building served as a busy hospital, helping people in the Niagara Falls area.
From Hospital to Nursing Home
From 1914 until 1965, the building was a working hospital. In 1965, a "new" Mount Saint Mary's Hospital was built in Lewiston. After that, the old hospital building was closed. It was then sold to a group called Catholic Charities, which helps people in need.
In 1966, the building was changed into a nursing home called St. Mary's Manor. It had 104 beds for people who needed care. A local architect named Mortimer J. Murphy Jr. designed the changes, which cost about $1,500,000 at the time. The building was used as a nursing home until 2003.
What Happened Next?
Since 2003, the building has been empty. It stands as a historic landmark, reminding people of its long history of helping the community.
