Mousetrap facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A mousetrap is a special device used to catch mice. People usually set these traps inside buildings where they think mice might be living. While most mousetraps are made to catch mice, some bigger ones can also catch other small animals like rats or squirrels.

Different Kinds of Mousetraps

There are many different ways to catch a mouse, and each type of trap works a little differently. Some traps are designed to kill the mouse quickly, while others are made to catch the mouse alive so it can be released later.

Snap Traps

Snap traps are probably the most well-known type of mousetrap. They usually have a spring-loaded bar that snaps shut very fast when a mouse touches the bait. The bait, like a small piece of cheese or peanut butter, is placed on a trigger. When the mouse tries to eat the bait, the trap springs closed. These traps are often made of wood or plastic and are meant to kill the mouse instantly.

Electronic Traps

Electronic mousetraps use electricity to humanely kill mice. When a mouse enters the trap, it steps on metal plates that deliver a high-voltage electric shock. These traps are often seen as a cleaner and quicker way to deal with mice compared to traditional snap traps. They are usually powered by batteries and can be reused many times.

Live-Capture Traps

If you don't want to harm the mice, live-capture traps are a good choice. These traps are designed to catch a mouse without hurting it. They often look like small boxes or cages with a one-way door. Once the mouse goes inside to get bait, the door closes behind it, trapping it safely inside. You can then take the mouse far away from your home and release it in a safe, natural area. This way, the mouse is not harmed, and your home is free of pests.

Glue Traps

Glue traps are flat pieces of cardboard or plastic covered with a very sticky adhesive. When a mouse walks onto the trap, it gets stuck to the glue. These traps are simple to use and don't require any bait. However, some people prefer not to use them because the mouse can remain stuck for a long time, which might not be the most humane option.

Bucket Traps

Bucket traps are a clever, often homemade, way to catch multiple mice. They usually involve a bucket filled with some water or a slippery substance, and a ramp or rotating bar leading to the top. Bait is placed on the rotating bar or at the edge of the bucket. When a mouse tries to reach the bait, it falls into the bucket. These traps can catch several mice before needing to be emptied.
