Moyogalpa is a town in Nicaragua. It is part of the Rivas department. Moyogalpa is the biggest town on Ometepe Island. It is also home to the largest of the three ferry ports on the island.
You can find many hotels, hostels, and restaurants here. There are also small shops called "Pulperias." These shops sell snacks, basic clothes, and other items. In 2016, a large supermarket opened in Moyogalpa. This store serves the island's 40,000 people and many tourists. Since then, local "Pulperias" have also improved their offerings.

What Does Moyogalpa Mean?
The name Moyogalpa comes from an old local language. It means "place of mosquitos."
Local Traditions and Festivals
Moyogalpa mixes old traditions with newer ones. These include Indigenous, European, and Catholic customs. This mix is best seen during the town's patron saint festival.
A special dance called el baile de las Inditas is part of this festival. This dance shows the relationship between Indigenous people and Europeans. It represents how their cultures came together. In the dance, a woman stands for the Indigenous people. A man represents the Europeans. The dance shows a relationship full of love, respect, and kindness.
Visiting Moyogalpa and Getting Around
Moyogalpa offers many places to stay. You can find fancy hotels or even rent a hammock. The people who live here are very friendly. They welcome the over 40,000 visitors each year.
Most visitors use the "chicken bus" to travel around. This bus is called "apollo bus" locally. Many people also rent scooters or motorcycles. These are fun ways to explore the island.
Moyogalpa Ferry Port
Moyogalpa has a busy ferry port. Many ferries and smaller boats called "lanchas" run daily. They operate every day, even on holidays. Most boats travel from San Jorge Ferry Port to Moyogalpa. Some also go to San José del Sur. Ferry times can change with the seasons and weather.
Most visitors do not bring their cars to the island. They travel on the ferries as foot passengers. Vehicles usually come across for business reasons. If you plan to bring a vehicle during busy times, it's best to book 5 days ahead. The busy season is from mid-November to mid-May.
