A mudguard, also known as a fender or wing, is a special part on a vehicle that covers its wheels. Its main job is to stop mud, water, rocks, and other things from being thrown up by the spinning tires. This helps keep the vehicle, its passengers, and other people nearby clean and safe from splashes and flying debris.

What is a Mudguard?

Mudguards are like shields for your vehicle's wheels. They are usually curved pieces of plastic or metal that fit over the top of each wheel. When a wheel spins, especially on a wet or dirty road, it can flick up a lot of stuff. Mudguards catch these things, stopping them from hitting the vehicle's body, windows, or even people walking or cycling nearby.

Why are Mudguards Important?

Mudguards do more than just keep things clean. They play several important roles for different types of vehicles:

• Protecting Parts: On bicycles, mudguards help protect important parts like the brakes and gears from getting clogged with mud and dirt. On cars and trucks, they shield the vehicle's paintwork and undercarriage.

Types of Mudguards

Mudguards come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the vehicle they are designed for.

Bicycle Mudguards

A bicycle mudguard helps keep the rider clean.

For bicycles, mudguards can be full-length, covering a large part of the wheel, or short clip-on versions. Full-length mudguards offer the best protection from splashes. They are often made from plastic or lightweight metal. Many mountain bikes or racing bikes might not have mudguards, but they are very common on city bikes or touring bikes.

Car and Truck Fenders

On cars, the parts that cover the wheels are usually called fenders (especially in North America) or wings (in the UK). These are built right into the body of the car. They are designed to match the car's style and protect the engine bay and passenger cabin from road spray.

Trucks, especially large ones, often have very strong mudguards or mud flaps behind their wheels. These flaps are usually made of rubber or plastic and hang down low. They are very important for preventing rocks and debris from being thrown at other vehicles on highways.

Materials and Design

Mudguards are made from various materials, including:

• Plastic: This is a common choice because it's lightweight, cheap, and can be molded into many shapes.
• Metal: Steel or aluminum mudguards are stronger and more durable, often used on heavy-duty vehicles or classic bikes.
• Rubber: Often used for mud flaps on trucks because it's flexible and can withstand impacts.

The design of a mudguard is important. It needs to be wide enough to cover the tire and long enough to catch most of the spray. Some mudguards have special shapes or small ridges to help direct water away more effectively.
