Part of the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail

The Multicultural Center of the South is an important stop on the statewide Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. This trail connects twenty-six special places across Louisiana that are important to African American history and culture. The center, along with the Southern University Museum of Art, is one of two places in Shreveport chosen for this trail.

On February 28, 2008, Mitch Landrieu, who was the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana at the time, held a press conference at the Multicultural Center. A Lieutenant Governor is a high-ranking state official, similar to a vice-president for a state. He announced the new Heritage Trail there. Landrieu explained that the trail focuses on real, existing places that already have so much history and meaning, rather than building new ones. He said, "We can't build anything more authentic than already exists."
