Mulukuku is a town and a municipality in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua. The name "Mulukukú" comes from the Miskito language and means "Riverbank of Sahinos."
History of Mulukuku
Mulukuku started as a special community called an asentamiento. This was a safe place for people during a difficult time in Nicaragua's history. People living in remote areas were brought to Mulukuku for their safety.
During this period, a training school for the Nicaraguan army was located in the community. Mulukuku was also very important because it was on the only road connecting the Matagalpa Department with other towns like Lisawe, Siuna, and Puerto Cabezas.
Rebuilding After Hurricane Joan
In October 1988, a big storm called Hurricane Joan hit Nicaragua. A large bridge over the Rio Tuma, which was almost finished, was destroyed. The entire community of Mulukuku was badly affected by the hurricane.
After the storm, the national government promised to help rebuild. Thanks to these efforts, Mulukuku has grown and become a busy place. With the new bridge complete, it is now an important center for trade and business in the region.
