The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region is a special part of Nicaragua. It's one of two areas that have their own rules and government. This region was created on September 7, 1987. It's very large, covering about 33,106 square kilometers. In 2021, about 541,189 people lived there. It is the biggest autonomous region or department in Nicaragua.

The capital city of this region is Puerto Cabezas. Part of this area is also known as the Mosquito Coast.

How the Region is Governed

The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region has a special government. It is called the Regional Council. This council is made up of people from different political groups. These include the Sandinistas (FSLN) and YATAMA. YATAMA is a political party for indigenous people.

The council also includes representatives from all the towns in the region. They meet in Puerto Cabezas to make decisions for the region.

People and Languages

The North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region is home to many different groups of people. Besides Mestizos, who are people of mixed European and Indigenous heritage, there are several indigenous groups. These include the Miskitos and the Mayangnas.

Because of its diverse population, many languages are spoken here. The official regional languages are Creole (like Miskito Coast Creole and Rama Cay Creole), Miskito, Sumo (which includes Mayangna and Ulwa), Garifuna, and Rama. Of course, the national language, Spanish, is also spoken. Many men in Puerto Cabezas also speak some English. This is because the area used to have US fruit plantations.
