Where Does the Name Mumbles Come From?
The name Mumbles is quite unique! People think it might come from an old word, Mamucium. This word is believed to be a Latin version of an even older Welsh name. It could be linked to the word "mamma," which means "mother." This might have been a reference to a local river goddess.

Mumbles Pier
Mumbles Pier is a long structure that stretches out into the sea. It first opened in 1898. The pier was the end point for the Swansea and Mumbles Railway. This railway was very special because it was the world's first public train service pulled by horses!
The Swansea and Mumbles Railway started on March 2, 1807. It used horses until 1877. Then, steam engines took over until 1929. After that, it switched to electric trams with two decks, which were like double-decker buses on tracks! The railway finally closed in January 1960.
Mumbles Lifeboat Station
The Mumbles Lifeboat Station has been helping people at sea since 1866. Lifeboats are special boats used to rescue people in trouble on the water.
In 1947, a very sad event happened. The entire lifeboat crew was lost at sea while trying to rescue the crew of a ship called the SS Samtampa. This tragic event is known as the Mumbles lifeboat disaster. There are memorials to the brave crew members in the nearby All Saints' Church, Oystermouth.
