Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Munangabum was an important leader of the Dja Dja Wurrung people in central Victoria, Australia. He was a clan head of the Liarga balug group and also a Spiritual Leader, known as a neyerneyemeet. He lived during a time when European settlers were arriving in Australia, in the 1830s and 1840s. Munangabum played a big part in how his people reacted to these changes.

Munangabum's Influence and Challenges

Munangabum was a key figure for the Dja Dja Wurrung people as European settlers began to arrive and establish new communities. He helped guide his community through these challenging times.

Imprisonment and Release

In 1840, Munangabum was taken to prison. This led many Dja Dja Wurrung people to travel all the way to Melbourne to ask for his release. The Woiwurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung people were very worried. They believed that if Munangabum was not freed, he might ask Bunjil, a powerful spirit, to release the Mindye, which could cause a terrible sickness for everyone. Munangabum was released from prison in August 1840.

Attack and Aftermath

On February 7, 1841, Munangabum was shot and hurt in the shoulder by settlers near Far Creek Station, which is west of Maryborough. Sadly, his friend, Gondiurmin, died during this incident. Three settlers were later arrested and went to court on May 18, 1841, regarding Gondiurmin's death. However, they were found not guilty because, at that time, Indigenous people were not allowed to give evidence in courts of law.

Role as an Envoy

In 1841, Munangabum worked as an envoy, or messenger, for Assistant Protector of Aborigines Edward Stone Parker. During one trip to the Mallee region, he almost died because he went without water for three days.

Munangabum's Death

Munangabum died in 1846. He was killed by a leader from a rival clan from the south.
