Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Musée québécois de l'agriculture et de l'alimentation (which means Quebec Museum of Agriculture and Food) is a cool place to visit in La Pocatière, Quebec, Canada. It used to be called the Musée François-Pilote. This museum is all about the history of people and their way of life in Quebec, especially how they farmed and grew food. It has lots of different collections and shows how farming education started in the area.

Discovering the Museum's History

The museum is named after a very important person, l'Abbé François Pilote. He started the very first permanent school for farming in Canada! This was a big deal, and it was only the second one in all of North America. The museum shows off many tools and machines used throughout the history of this special school.

The Top Floor: Learning and Nature

The fourth, or top, floor of the museum is all about how people learned to farm in the past. You can see how students were taught and what equipment they used. This floor also has a cool display of birds that were preserved by a bird expert named Antoine Tanguay. He was an ornithologist, which is someone who studies birds.

The Third Floor: Stepping Back in Time

On the third floor, you can imagine what homes looked like in Quebec in the early 1900s. There are examples of rooms from a wealthy family's house and also from a successful farmer's home. They even use real furniture from the farmer's old house!

You can also see what a country schoolroom looked like back then. There's a display of an old country store, an optician's office (where you get your eyes checked), and even the offices of a parish priest, a notary (someone who helps with legal papers), a doctor, and a dentist. This floor also celebrates the work of l'Abbé Maurice Proulx. He was a pioneer in making movies in Quebec and used to teach at the School of Agriculture.

The Second Floor: Local Animals and New Exhibits

The second floor of the museum is home to displays about the animals that live in the Quebec region. It's a great way to learn about the local wildlife. Plus, this floor always has a special visiting exhibition that changes every year, so there's always something new to see!

The First Floor: Farming and Transport

When you get to the first floor, you'll learn all about how maple syrup is made. Quebec is famous for its maple syrup! You can also see tools used for different crafts that people practiced in the region. There's a display of old ways people used to travel, and you can even see examples of big farming machines from the past.
