The Museo de la Canción Yucateca Asociación Civil (which means the Museum of Yucatecan Song) is a special place in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. This museum opened in 1978. Its main goal is to find, keep safe, and share the unique music and culture from the Yucatán Peninsula.
About the Museum
This museum helps everyone learn about the rich musical history of Yucatán. It shows how important music is to the people of this region.
Its History
The idea for the museum came from Mrs. Rosario Cáceres Baqueiro. She is the granddaughter of a famous musician named Cirilo Baqueiro Preve, who was also known as Chan Cil. He created a style of music called "trova yucateca."
The museum is located in an old house that looks like buildings from a long time ago. It was built in the late 1800s. This house is in the La Mejorada neighborhood, right in the center of Mérida. The house was given to the museum in 2001. Later, in 2015, the building was fixed up and made new again.
What You Can See
When you visit the museum, you'll find many interesting things. In the courtyard, there are life-size statues of famous singers like Pepe Domínguez, Guty Cárdenas, and Ricardo Palmerín.
The museum also has a theater where performances might take place. Inside, you can see many different items that tell the story of Yucatecan music. These include old musical instruments, phonographs (which are like old record players), musical scores (the written music), photographs, paintings, and sculptures. All these displays help visitors understand the history and beauty of Yucatecan songs.
